BIG LONDON FIRE

The British Insurance Association said today that preliminary estimates of the damage caused bv the giant fire which swept British Railways’ Bishopgate goods depot on Saturday “may be in the neighbourhood of £5.000.000. and could be considerably more.” A year or two ago British Railways decided to carry its own fire risk on buildings The fire, described as the worst in Britain since the Second World War blitz destroyed a sorting office, a freight shed, and hundreds of rpiiwav waggons and motor vehicles.
