BRIEF BAN ON SONG
Reference To Aborigines (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) PERTH, December 7. "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport,” a well-known song by a top Australian recording artist, Rolf Harris, was put on the Australian Broadcasting Commission’s banned list briefly yesterday. The A.B.C. said that only instrumental versions would be played in future, but later said there had been a misunderstanding and there would be no restriction of the vocal version. The first report suggested that the vocal version would be banned because certain lines in the song might be offensive to aborigines or to those trying to help them. The lines were: “Let the abos go loose, Blue, “They’re of no further use, Blue.”
A member of the Native Welfare Department said: “It is not right that derogatory references to the original inhabitants of Australia should be broadcast.” He said aborigines had not complained because they were accustomed to derogatory remarks.
