Export Of Manufactured Goods

Sir, —Why do we have such a spate of propaganda from Mr Marshall and others on this subject, and hardly a word about the enormous earnings of the primary industries? The figures. £12,000,000 against £400,000.000, speak for themselves. The former is hardly chicken-feed, but even so is open to question. There is a big difference between true manufacturers—radio, television, metal-working industries, etc, and the processing of raw materials, almost

wholly farm goods or forestry products. The former largely requires protection by import

control, the latter very rarely do, being competitive. Even if we include woollen goods, including carpets, as true manufactures, figures would indicate that the export earnings would hardly be considered a dribble. Let the Ministry of Industries and Commerce tell the whole story.—Yours, etc., V. WILKINSON. Ashburton, December 7, 1964.
