Flashing Lights On Vehicles
Sir,—About 3 p.m. on Saturday, coming from the Heathcote-Ferry road roundabout, I was passed by a greyish car with flashing light going. I was under the impression that this flashing light was reserved for police, ambulance, traffic department, and breakdovm waggon. However, on 'he side of this car was: “U.S. Navy Dept.” This might explain it, but why the flashing light while this car was being driven at a normal speed and not in any obvious emergency. Is this a case of one rule for our visitors and another for the New Zealander?—Yours, etc, JUST WONDERING. December 1, 1964. [The District Officer of the Transport Department (Mr D. L. Hogan) says: “Although it is not the type of ambulance we are used to in this country, the vehicle nevertheless is an ambulance operated by the United States Navy, and as such it is legally entitled to a red flashing light. It was answering a call to the United States Navy Headquarters at Harewood.”]
