SHOOTING OF AFRICANS
Wrong Troops Named
(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copyright > NEW YORK, Nov. 26.
In a dispatch from Stanleyville, the Congo, yesterday, United Press International erroneously reported that Belgian paratroops shot and killed African civilians in the streets, the news agency said today. The dispatch said that in one instance paratroops stopped an African riding a bicycle and shot him dead after accusing him of lying in answer to questions.
U.P.I. said further investigation indicated that the African was shot by soldiers wearing Belgian uniforms and speaking Flemish and French. But they were not wearing the red berets of the Belgian paratroops.
Possibly they were mercenaries with the Congo national army of the Premier, Mr Moise Tshombe, although it was not now possible to make definite identification, U.P.I. said.
The Belgian Defence Ministry in Brussels has denied that Belgian troops were involved in any of the shootings reported in the U.P.I. Stanleyville dispatch of yesterday.
