CASSOCK IS PUT DOW

Sire Of Great Sensation “The Press" Special Service INVERCARGILL, November 19. A leading sire of recent seasons, the English-bred horse, Cassock, was put down at the Hampton Lodge Stud, Invercargill, during the week. Cassock, which was foaled in 1943 proved a difficult horse to handle in the closing stages of his career. A post-mortem found that he had an abnormally large heart—about half as big again as the normal horse. He stood in Canterbury, later in Otago and his closing years in Southland, but has not been bred from in the last two seasons. His last foal is a filly, now a yearling, whose dam is a half-sister by Bellborough to Great. Sensation, which was Cassock’s greatest winner. If he had not sired another winner, Cassock gained for himself a niche in New Zealand racing records by siring Great Sensation, the winner of almost £40,000 in stakes including three Wellington Cups.

In the 12 seasons that Cassock’s stock raced he sired the winners of more than 319 races and 727 places for £158,850 in stakes in New Zealand. His stock won as both sprinters and stayers. Besides Great Sensation he left such winners as Cardinal King, a top sprinter, which won 16 races, a Great Autumn Handicap and Invercargill Gold Cup winner in Cahon, a top miler in Cheyenne, which won 14 races, Balbek, Birthright, Friar’s Birthday, Gay Tommy, Golden Glen, Manners, and a string of others.
