OPOSSUM SKINS
Interest Of China (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Nov. 19. Mr P. Blanchfield, member of Parliament for Westland, thinks the Chinese should be interested in the value of opossum skins and that the Government should explore the possibility of opening this alternative market for thousands of skins awaiting buyers in London.
In reply to a Parliamentary question by Mr Blanchfield on this, the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) has said it is open for China to purchase whatever skins New Zealand has for export. “Inquiries I have made show opossum skins remaining unsold on the London market are of inferior quality and that all skins acceptable for use in the furrier trade have been sold,” said Mr Marshall.
The low prices at which they are available should be an inducement if China were interested in buying them, he said. Mr Blanchfield based his question on a statement by the managing-director of the International Wool Secretariat (Mr W. J. Vines) that China was a big possible market for wool.
