OPPONENTS SOUGHT
US. Athlete Visiting Negotiations are at present being conducted by Canterbury athletic officials, in conjunction with the Olympic coach (Mr A. L. Lydiard), to obtain top-class opposition for the American steeplechase champion and Olympic representative, J. Fishback, who is at present in New Zealand on holiday and will be visiting Christchurch in about a fortnight. It is hoped that M. G. Halberg, W. D. Baillie and possibly other prominent distance runners, will be able to come to Christchurch and race against Fishback over 3000 metres or 5000 metres. If suitable opposition can be found to match against Fishback, the race will probably be held at Rugby Park on December 2 in the early evening. Fishback, who has relatives in New Zealand, arrived in the Dominion at the conclusion of the recent tour of Australia by a group of American Olympic athletes. He slightly injured a leg at Melbourne and has been unable to compete in the two international meetings held in the country since his arrival.
