U.S. BASES CLOSING
‘Strength Not Weakened’ (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, Nov. 19. Mr Robert McNamara, the United States Secretary of Defence, today disclosed plans to cut 500 million dollars from the defence Budget by closing down 95 surplus and obsolete military establishments in the United States and abroad. He said the saving could be made without weakening United States military strength or combat readiness. Some of the establishments involved were in five countries in Europe, but their locations would be withheld until negotiations had been completed with governments concerned. The establishments included air bases and depots, army arsenals, and shipyards. Mr McNamara said the Federal Government would do everything it could to soften the impact of the programme on local communities. He said “No major force movements are involved—they are consolidating, not redeployment.”
