BOWING AT GAMES
‘Hardly Matter For Dispute’
(N.Z. Press Association! WELLINGTON, Nov. 18.
The Tokyo bowing incident was “hardly a matter for international dispute,” the chairman of the New Zealand Olympic and British Empire Games Association (Mr H. I. Austad) said today. “I saw it,” said Mr Austad, “and I would say far too much has been made of it.
“I would say some press representatives got the wrong reaction.
“While it was due to overexuberance, the incident was hardly a matter for international dispute. I had this opinion verified by leading Japanese people.” Told that Mr H. Weir, an Australian member of the International Olympic Committee, had said the New Zealanders’ “disgusting exhibitionism” would be discussed by the 1.0. C. at its next meeting, Mr Austad expressed surprise. Mr Austad said the New Zealand association would discuss disciplinary measures only if the team manager’s report considered them warranted.
