Annual Inspection Of St. John Ambulance Corps

A tree-surrounded area of North Hagley Park formed a picturesque parade ground for the Christchurch Corps of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, when members received service medals and Grand Prior cadet badges at the annual corps inspection yesterday afternoon.

The awards were presented by the officer in charge of the district, LieutenantColonel G. L. Falck. More than 700 members took part in the parade. The massed black uniforms of the men, complementing the light grey of the women’s tunics, made an impressive display, heightened by the attractive setting. After the general salute, Colonel Falck inspected the units. The ceremony of trooping the Corps Colour was performed, members standing at attention as three officers comprising the Corps Colour party slow marched in front of the parade. The parade, under the command of Corps Superintendent G. H. Dunlop, was attended by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) and Mrs Manning,

and the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren), who is president of the Canterbury centre of the association.

Colonel Falck congratulated all the participants on the standard of the parade. He hoped that next year the inspecting officer would be the Chief Commissioner himself, Brigadier J. M. Mitchell, formerly of Christchurch. Recruiting, in spite of the work of the recruiting officer, was still not satisfactory. “The people of Christchurch may .not realise that the increasing demands at sports grounds can only be met through not leaving it to the other fellow,” he said.

Mr Manning spoke of the City Council’s appreciation of the corps’s service to the community.

A Neil Robertson stretcher, specially designed for rescue work in difficult places, given to the corps by the Canterbury branch of the ExPrisoners of War Association, was presented by the president, Mr C. Catchpole. Music during the parade was played by the band of the Linwood Salvation Army Citadel. Demonstrations by various units ended the afternoon’s activities. Girl and boy cadets gave displays in welfare work and handyman crafts, and brigade officers performed a “rescue operation,” taking an “injured” man from one side of the Avon to the other by means of overhead ropes and pulleys, and using the new stretcher.
