The Olympic women’s high jump silver medallist, Miss Michelle Mason-Brown, of New South Wales, today became the second woman to clear six feet in the high jump. She cleared 6ft Oiln during the international athletics meeting to steal some of the limelight from visiting American Olympians. Her leap set a new Commonwealth record, beating the sft Ilin she set in Sydney Just before leaving for Tokyo. Miss Mason-Brown now Joins the Rumanian, lolanda Balas, the Tokyo gold medallist, who was previously; the only woman to have achieved 6ft. Min Balas holds the world record of 6ft 3iln. The Tokyo men’s high Jump silver medallist, John Thomas, also performed well today, clearing 7ft. He attempted 7ft 2in but failed. The 5000 metres gold medallist, Bob Schul, again demonstrated his tactical superiority over the world record-holder, Ron Clarke, of Victoria, by outsprinting Clarke in the final stages of a 2000 metres race. Schul tucked himself in behind Clarke throughout the race. On the back straight in the final lap Schul “kicked” and passed Clarke effortlessly, to win in Smln 10.2 sec. Clarke recorded smin 12.8 sec. The pole vaulter. Fred Hansen, another Tokyo winner, set an Australian.' record of 16ft in the pole vault. This bettered the Old mark by lOiln. Hansen then ordered the bar up to 17ft but failed in all three attempts.
