LANGFORD HOUSE

Mayor Opens Wing

The new brick wing of Langford House, one of the homes of the Aged People’s Welfare Council, was officially opened on Saturday morning by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning). The wing was built in memory of Dr. Catherine Newman, an Opawa doctor who was murdered in 1961 and whose legacy of £2BOO was, in the words of the Mayor, “the foundation stone” which made the building possible.

Offering the congratulations of the City Council, Mr Manning said that the new wing was an “expression of the compassion which • permeates a large number of persons in our community.” He also said that in his lifetime he had seen a change in the public conscience toward aged people. The new wing ’ has bedrooms for eight persons, as well as a lounge.. At present, five women and three men are using the wing. Mr W. H. Larcombe, chairman of the Langford House committee, expressed appreciation to the South Christchurch Rotary Club, the Health Department, and the Canterbury Masonic Charitable Trust for their contributions to the new wing. The Rotarians held a fair, he said, at which £2OOO was raised for the building of the wing. The Health Department provided 75 per cent of the funds, and the Masonic organisation gave all the furniture and carpets for the new wing. Representing the Health Department at the opening ceremony, Mr R. Sullivan said that the taxpayers’ money had been wisely spent.

Part of the St. Andrew’s College Band, kilted and playing bagpipes, also took part in the ceremony.
