FIELD TRIP TO OMIHI
Forest And Bird Society
Nearly 250 members of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society took part in a field trip to the Omihi State Forest on Saturday. Although the weather in Christchurch was dull and overcast when the party left there were clear skies and bright sunshine before half of the journey had been completed. The visitors were met on arrival by Mr G. W. Laney, officer-in-charge, and his staff, and while the coppers were being boiled for lunch, Mr Laney gave a talk on the programme of work being undertaken in the forest under difficult soil conditions.
The Omihi forest was originally started to combat the spread of nassella tussock and is at present being extended southwards to include further areas similarly infested. After lunch the party was taken on a tour of part of the forest and shown the work completed to date and the progress of the various types of trees already planted. Before the party left on the homeward journey, Mr Laney and his staff were thanked for the part they had played in making the day interesting and enjoyable.
