CHARLESTON SANDS

Commercial Prospects Coastal sands from Charleston “are eminently suitable for foundry moulds requiring a high permeability and low green strength,” say Messrs T. E. J. Scahill and W. T. Shannon, of the Chemistry Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, in the “New Zealand Journal of Science.”

“The high permeability values obtained when Charleston sands are mixed with 5 per cent to 12 per cent bentonite make them suitable for special moulding purposes where high permeability is required and green compression strength is not critical,” the invesigators say. “This particular blend would be a suitable material for special moulding requirements at present met by importing sands. “Blending Charleston sand with greater amounts of bentonite, or with finer sands, would also make a suitable mixture for more general use in grey iron moulding. “Since large tonnages are easily accessible for bulk transport through local ports to Wellington and other districts, these Charleston deposits warrant consideration as a commercial source of foundry sands.”
