PINNED BY CAR
Hour’s Wait For Help A young man was pinned against a bank by a car with a thumb jammed in the car door for about an hour late on Saturday evening. He is Kevin McMenamin, aged 23, a journalist, of 191 Memorial avenue. Mr McMenamin tried to attract attention by shouting and by sounding the Morse code S.O.S. on the horn with his free hand, but it was some time before a resident called the police and went to investigate. The accident occurred when Mr McMenamin was backing the car down a small side road in the St. Andrews Hill area. A rear wheel ran into a ditch, and he got out. The car door caught on the side of a bank, and he tried to push the car forward so that he could close the door. The car ran backwards, pinning him against the bank with his legs crossed and the door jammed tightly on his thumb. When help arrived the car had to be lifted off his legs. Mr McMenamin was taken to the Christchurch Hospital in a police car, as the ambulance which arrived had to attend a maternity case. He was treated for band and leg injuries.
