LYTTELTON DISPUTE

No Change At Week-end

There have been no developments in Lyttelton’s tallow dispute. Both the secretary of the Lyttelton Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr R. K. Fergus) and the secretary of the Lyttelton Port Employers’ Association (Mr J. Twomey) said yesterday that the position had not changed during the week-end. Today at 8 a.m. the executive of the union will meet, and the dispute is expected to be discussed at this meeting. Mr Fergus said there had been no developments since Friday evening, when two men were placed on penalty. One of the two men engaged on work with the hose refused to start work in the rain at 5.15 p.m. and was placed on penalty. At 8 p.m., the second man on the hose refused to work by himself. He was also placed on penalty. Work had stopped at 6.20 p.m. because of the rain. At 3 p.m. the port employers asked the union to finish the cargo, but this was refused. Mr Twomey said he expected a statement on the dispute to be made from Wellington.
