1970 EMPIRE GAMES
No Lobbying At Tokyo
No representations will be made, either official or unofficial, at Tokyo to support Christchurch’s case for holding 1970 Empire Games, said Mr E. Williams, secretary bf the Christchurch Empire Games Promotion Committee, yesterday. Mr Williams was commenting on a report from Tokyo that Edinburgh’s case for holding the 1970 games would be pressed with vigour at Tokyo when Commonwealth countries met to discuss details of the 1966 games at Kingston, Jamaica. He said that it would not be disadvantageous to Christchurch to. avoid lobbying at this stage. The proper time to make representations would be after the 1966 Empire Games when the next venue was decided, Mr H. P. Smith, the chairman, said that the Christ? church committee had made it clear to the New Zealand British Empire and Olympic Games Association that it would whole-heartedly support New Zealand’s claims for the 1970 games and felt that Christchurch should be the venue.
“As there are members of that committee at Tokyo they will be aware of Christchurch’s position,” he said.
