RED CROSS SOCIETY

Centre’s Assessment Increased The North Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society has been asked to increase its annual contribution to the society’s national headquarters funds from £B5O to £1133. The chairman of the executive (Mr E. W. Reeves) said at the centre’s quarterly meeting that all centres had been asked to increase their contributions. The national executive had made the new allocations after consideration of each centre's population, membership, recent activities and financial situation. If the allocations had been made on a membership basis alone, he said, the North Canterbury centre, which comprises nearly one quarter of all members in New Zealand, would have faced a considerably larger increase. The society was running at a loss, Mr Reeves said. Last year the deficiency had been £1853. With the Increased contributions from centres the society’s annual assessment would rise from £7930 to £11,471, but was still expected to show a loss on the new assessment. He felt the North Canterbury centre could meet the increase, and, with the assistance of its sub-centres, still make its usual contributions to other causes such as disaster relief and the development fund, he said. The president (Mrs R. I. Brake) requested sub-centres to discuss and decide individually if they were able to increase their annual contributions to the centre, and to report their decisions to the centre’s executive.
