Turks Move On ‘Green Line’

NICOSIA, October 1.

Turkish Cypriots yesterday erected three new road blocks along the 16-mile Nicosia-Kyrenia road which connects the capital with Kyrenia Port.

Turkish Cypriot civilians and Turkish Army troops have controlled the road since communal violence broke out in Cyprus last December. Large numbers of armed men were seen near the new road blocks yesterday, and ob-

servers reported much activity near the. “green line” separation Greek and Turkish Cypriot sectors of the city. Mr Carlos Alfredo Bernardes, of Brazil, the new special representative of the United Nations SecretaryGeneral, U Thant, arrived in Nicosia yesterday by air from New York. Mr Bernardes said he had read documents about the questions of the rotation of the Turkish Army contingent, and the opening of the Kyre-, nia road, but added he had no particular instructions from U Thant on these questions. The Swedish Government announced in Stockholm yesterday that its UN. peacekeeping force will stay in Cyprus for another three months. The announcement was made after the Government Foreign Affairs Committee went into a special session called by the Prime Minister, Mr Tage Erlander, last week because of an alleged smuggling incident by Swedish troops on the island.

Turks Reject Cypriot Note

Turkey has rejected a note from the Cyprus Government claiming that a Turkish submarine violated Cyprus territorial waters on the night of September 13-14, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said. The spokesman said no Turkish submarine had been in island waters.
