FLOOD IN INDIA
1000 Said Drowned f.V Z. Press Assn —.Copyright; NEW DELHI, Sept 30. A rain-swollen reservoir burst and sent a 10ft high wall of water surging through the south-east Indian town of Macherla, drowning more than 1000 persons, unofficial reports said tonight. Thousands of persons were reported perched on housetops and clinging to trees in Macherla. Helpless patients were carried away by the flood when the torrent hit a hospital. There were heavy casualties in a crowded bus station. Monsoon rains swelled the reservoir. The Macherla disaster overtook the Andhra State Government as it tried to help 450 fishermen feared lost in a cyclone along the Kakihada coast of Bengal. The latest reports said two fishermen swam ashore, but they could not say what happened to the others in 75 fishing boats, who had left on Saturday intending to return on Monday. Port officials have dispatched launches to search for the fishermen in stormy seas while Indian Air Force planes from Madras were reported scouring the sea at low levels.
