£30M. FOR SCHOOLS
Boards To Ask Govt. (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 30. The Education Boards’ Association will ask the Government for an additional £3O million for school buildings. The association conference in Auckland today expressed concern at the lack of finance for primary school buildings. Delegates complained that the constant pruning of classroom replacement programmes had resulted in a large back-log of urgent work. The Auckland board alone had nearly 600 temporary prefabricated classrooms. Boards were also faced with the need to provide additional classrooms, to build and enlarge teachers’ colleges and hostels and buy sites for new schools. The association will recommend to the Government that the additional finance be raised by a capital works loan if it is not available out of taxation.
