REPORTING HOCKEY

Position Of

“The Press”

“Whether we report in future any fixtures under the control of the Canterbury Hockey Association will be a matter for further consideration,” the editor of "The Press” informed members of the association by letter last evening. The letter was received after a brief discussion and no action was taken. Earlier this month, the Canterbury association withdrew a press pass and press facilities from the hockey reporter of “The Press” for the second test between India and New Zealand because it disagreed with his report of the first test.

“As this paper has obligations riot only to its own readers but to the New Zealand Press Association, we shall make arrangements to report the second test match on Saturday without the facilities and courtesies customarily extended by sports bodies to newspapers.” the editor wrote to the association.

“Do they mean that all reports could cease or that there will be a change of reporter?” asked Mr B. Lloyd.

“They could cease, I take it,” replied the chairman (Mr N. Hocking). The association had made a decision and it had to stick to it, he said.
