Retention Meantime

(N.Z: Press Assn. —Copyright) CANBERRA, September 22. A squadron of Sabre jet fighters due to return to their New South Wales base today will be retained indefinitely in Darwin.

The 16 fighters of 76 squadron left ■ Williamstown, N.S.W., on September 8 for what was officially described as routine exercises.

R.A.A.F. sources are tightlipped about the squadron not returning. But the silence is considered most significant and reflects the Government’s anxiety at the deteriorated war situation to the north. The decision will have two immediate effects:

Display the Government’s determination to show some of its teeth at its most northern mainland defence base.
