MALAYSIAN AIR SPACE CLOSURE

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) KUALA LUMPUR, September 22. The Malaysian Government is planning to close off the air space over the Malayan peninsula.

This follows the landing of about 100 Indonesian paratroopers in South Malaya, allegedly by Hercules Cl3O transports of the Indonesian Air Force. It is believed that the proclamation of an “air identification zone” from Singapore to the border of Thailand will be made some time this week. The closure of air space would mean that unauthorised aircraft were liable to be intercepted and shot down or at least forced down, while civil airliners would have to keep to pre-arranged corridors. Bomber Flights The skies of Malaysian Borneo were declared an air identification defence zone last February, following the) appearance of Indonesian bombers over major towns of, the territory. Since then the 1 bombers have not returned. Malaysia is defended in the air by British Hawker Hunter and Javelin jet fighters and i Bloodhound missiles based 1

on Singapore, and by Australian Sabre jet fighters at Butterworth, Northern Malaya.
