GAOLED FOR 9 MONTHS
Manslaughter Of Girl (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WANGANUI, Sept. 9. Putt Putt Stewart, aged 28, was gaoled for nine months when she appeared in the Supreme Court at Wanganui today. Last week she was found guilty on the manslaughter of her foster child, Dianne Wharehau Bennett, aged 2, at Mataroa, near Taihape, on June 8. Mr Justice McGregor passed sentence this morning, after a plea for, leniency from Stewart’s counsel, Mr M. H. W. Lance. A Maori jury last week added a recommendation for leniency, in finding Stewart, also known as Blossom Iti, a housewife, guilty of manslaughter. Mr Justice McGregor said he had a duty to the community. He could not avoid sending Stewart to gaol. The gaol term will be followed by a year's probation. Mr C. N. Armstrong appeared for the Crown.
