Compulsory Safety Belts
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept. 8. Motorists may be compelled to instal safety belts in their vehicles. The Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) is considering this requirement. He disclosed this in Parliament tonight during discussion of the Transport Department estimates. Dr. A. M. Finlay (Opp., Waitakere) had asked whether these belts would be made compulsory now that they had proved their worth as life-savers. This could bring down their cost, which was now higher than it ought to be.
