Radiation Pollution Of Oceans
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, September 8. Russian investigations into the radioactive contamination of the world’s oceans has raised doubts that atomic waste can safely be buried at sea. Russian scientists reported at Geneva that tests by research ships had shown that the strontium 90 from nuclear tests had moved rapidly throughout the oceans, although not evenly, and had spread downwards to considerable depths. Radioactive substances, particularly strontium 90, they said, could inflict “irreparable harm” to the resources of the oceans.
