Social Security Benefits
Sir, —The old-age pensioners will get one meal a week and the wage-earners will get three meals a week.—Yours, FAR BACK DAN. September 7, 1964.
Sir,—“Fifty-four Grandchildren” has her facts wrong as Labour was forced to delay the increases up to six months because of financial difficulties due to the financial bungling of the previous Government. The Tories in 1950-56 and 1961-64 have only increased benefits because their, user-pays and steady-does-it policies have skyrocketed the cost of living. Furthermore, they also timed their increases of social security beneficiaries. The Coalition Government did this unsuccessfully in 1935 by raising the old-age pension. They did this by restoring the cuts previously made on the ground of economy. I would like “54 Grandchildren” to explain why many age beneficiaries have been forced to seek charitable aid under this socalled generous Government? —Yours, etc., DISILLUSIONED NATIONALIST. September 6, 1964.
