BIRD CALL STUDY
Microphone In Bush "Tht Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, Sept. 2. Forest birds at Oparau have been under electronic observation. Their calls—and their whispers—have been heard by 32 members of the Hamilton Junior Naturalists’ Club camping there on a week-long field trip. A club leader (Mr J. Kendrick) planted a microphone in the bush surrounding the party’s lodge, making it possible to relay bird calls to the lodge and play them over a loudspeaker. Mr Kendrick is so good as a bird mimic that he has had the birds Answering his calls. Through the microphone, club members identified the calls of many birds, including kokakos and kiwis. As a result information such as the classification of the various notes produced by adult and young birds and the relation of particular notes to behaviour has been, collected. This, combined with the field studies covering local plant and animal life, will be collated tn a handbook of the natural history of the area.
