NECTARINE FROM U.S.
New Variety For N.Z. "The Frees" Special service AUCKLAND, Sept 2. A new variety of nectarine may be on sale in New Zealand in the next few years. Small numbers of the nectarine, named New York 1017, have been propagated by the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, Ltd., at Levin. Sample trees are to be distributed. Further trees have been budded and small commercial quantities will be delivered in 1965. The nectarine, according to the federation, is highly regarded overseas. Budwood of other new nectarines is in quarantine following arrangements made in the United States. If propagation of these is successful, commercial quantities are expected to be available to the industry within the next few years. The federation said that evidence from America Indicated that the hew nectarines were gradually replacing the peach in public favour.
