Women’s Hockey XI Improves

(From Our Own Reporter)

BLENHEIM, September 2.

An improved showing by the forward line in the first half of today’s match against Taranaki gave hopes that the Canterbury K Cup team would finish the national women’s hockey tournament on a high note. But, although leading 4-0 at half-time, Canterbury could not score in the second half.

AU of the Canterbury goals were scored in the first 20 minutes. The inside-right, J. Davies, opened the scoring after a fine piece of field work when she reached the edge of the circle and drove a hard shot to the corner of the net. She also scored the second goal with another hard shot to the corner of the net. Canterbury, was playing with more confidence than earlier in the tournament and Davies started the next goal. She slipped a nice pass to

the right wing, D. Eddy, who passed to G. Phillips, who beat the goal-keeper. Eddy, playing on the right wing, scored the fourth goal with an angled shot from the edge of the circle. However, Canterbury again deteriorated in the second half. The halves fell back and the forwards lost the combination they showed in the 'first half. But with Davies always working hard, Canterbury finished the match on the offensive. Otago Too Strong Although having four players out with injuries, Otago proved too strong for Ashburton and won, 5-0. Otago and Maniatoto (victor over Canterbury in the first game) are now the only unbeaten teams and will probably meet in the final. Malvern nearly caused an upset in the Major B section, lead ing Wellington, 1-0, at halftime, and succumbing by only 3-1. Nelson lost Its first point of the tournament when It drew, 0-0, with Central Otago in the Minor B section. The first half was very even although Central Otago looked more dangerous on attack. Nelson was a little superior in the second half, but Central Otago’s defence was too strong.
