Import Licences

Sir, —I would hesitate to accuse Mr Shelton of talking poppycock when he, again, deplores the need to restrict import licences because “the funds required ... are just not available” but the fact remains that a considerable amount is available from an untapped source. If licences were granted, on the “many applications”—Mr Shelton’s words for no-remittance licences or if he would allow these overseas funds to be used constructively in augmenting existing licences he need not have to cut our imports by 10 per cent,: —Yours JOHN ABBOTT. Ashburton, August 29, 1964.
