TOHEROA QUOTAS

60 Prosecutions Pending (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 31. Five cases out of 60 prosecutions being brought by the Marine Department for exceeding toheroa quotas at Muriwai were against commercial ventures, the Auckland district inspector of fisheries (Mr E. E. French) said today. The five, he said, were persons who were interested in taking shellfish away by the truckload. But most prosecutions were against private families who exceeded the regulation quota and size. Most of the prosecutions would relate to the first two weeks of the July-August season, which ended today, said Mr French.

Although 3.5 million toheroa were taken from the beach compared with the 4 million last year, it was not a good season. About 34,000 cars visited the beach.

A Whangarei report says the toheroa beaches in Northland were thronged with dig gers and others yesterday, the last Sunday of the season. Results of digging operations varied considerably. Toheroa searchers were also out in force on beaches near Levin yesterday and a large number were seeing the season out today. Reports from Levin say the season there has been particularly good.
