SANATORIUM TO CLOSE
Institution At Otaki (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, August 31. The Palmerston North Hospital Board has permission to close the Otaki sanatorium as a tuberculosis institution. The Otaki maternity home may also close. The board today decided to defer an executive committee recommendation that ministerial approval be sought to close the maternity home until the next board meeting. Meanwhile, the question will be brought up when a subcommittee meets the Minister of Health (Mr McKay) for talks about the future of the sanatorium. Last month the board was told it would cost £25,000 to convert the sanatorium into a 40-bed geriatric hospital. Today, the board received a report from the sub-committee dealing with the sanatorium’s future advising against the proposal.
