Vietnam
Sir, —The Khanh regime in Saigon is being attacked not only by the Viet Cong, but now by its previous supporters and students who are rebelling against increased dictatorial methods. Thus the Diem and Minh downfalls may be repeated. However if Senator Gruening is right in his speech of August 6, the United States may yet escalate the war to North Vietnam, in a last-ditch effort to “preserve peace and freedom” in South-east Asia at any cost. Senator Gruening said: “The last episode—the attack by North Vietnam vessels on United States naval vessels— I consider an inevitable development of the United States steady escalation of our own military activities. ... 1 regret, and consider it a pity, that both our political parties appear now to be committed to a policy of war.” If the United States escalates, is New Zealand also committed to a policy of war? With our Asian “doorstep” defence philosophy, it would appear so.—Yours, etc., L. F. J. ROSS. August 25, 1964.
