Art Cinema

Sir,—My attention has been drawn to a letter in “The Press” of August 25 concerning the intention of this company to initiate a three-month trial period of art and Continental films at the State Theatre. Your correspondent seems to indicate that this trial is doomed from the start because of the seating capacity of the State in comparison to similar theatres overseas. However, I would point out that the seating capacity of the State in Christchurch is perfectly in line with that

of our other successful art cinemas throughout the country. For example, the Lido, Auckland, seats 790, and has been in operation for two-and-a-half years. The State International, Dunedin, seats 870, and has been in operation for the last six months. By comparison, the seating capacity of the State, Christchurch, is 820, less than Dunedin and only a few more than Auckland. I would say that the success of the policy does not depend on the seating capacity of the the theatre, but, rather, the enthusiasm of the movie-goer. —Yours, etc., MICHAEL MOODABE. J NR., Amalgated Theatres, Ltd. August 26, 1964.
