The Traffic Plan

Sir,—One grows a little tired of “Observer’s” carping criticisms of the efforts of those citizens of Christchurch who are endeavouring by meetings and deputations to retain the beauty and peace of the environment which has till lately been our pride and joy. If “Observer” favours the traffic plan which cuts through the loVely sweep of Park terrace, and also the widened bridge at Antigua street which will pour traffic into Rolleston avenue, then I dub him a vandal and urge others to speak up for “Hands off Antigua Street Bridge, Rolleston Avenue, and Park Terrace.” That an alternative route for traffic cannot be found, I just don’t believe. —Yours, etc., CITIZEN. August 27, 1964.

Sir, —Your editorial reference to the enthusiastic “pedestrians” who want to keep motor vehicles out of the city seems to hit the nail on the head. My guess is that 99 per cent, of them think in terms of keeping other people’s vehicles out so that they can drive their own cars through uncongested streets. Did the gentleman who said “To hell with traffic flow” drive to the forum in a car? I am informed that there was a most impressive line-up of parked cars in Rolleston avenue and Worcester street while the “enthusiastic pedestrians” were recording in the museum lecture hall their protests against the intrusion of the motor-car into the sacred “precinct.”—Yours, etc., REALIST. August 27, 1964.
