ASSOCIATE CONDUCTOR

Arrival Next Month <N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 27. Laszlo Heltay, the N.Z.B.C. Symphony Orchestra’s newlyappointed associate conductor, arrives in New Zealand with his wife on September 14. Hungarian-born Mr Heltay was previously Director of Music at Merton College, Oxford. In 1960 he founded the Collegium Musicum Oxoniese, a choir of 30 or more singers composed of members of Oxford University. Under Mr Heltay’s direction this choir won great praise in England and on the Continent. In 1957, while still a student in musicology at Merton College, he founded the Kodaly Choir and Orchestra, which now gives regular concerts in Oxford. He chose the name Kodaly in honour of the composer, under whom he studied while a student at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. Before moving to England in 1956, Mr Heltay was music producer and conductor at Radio Budapest.
