Conversion Of New Car
A Christchurch civil engineer, Mr N. S. Sutherland, of 22 Normans road, yesterday took delivery of a new Chrysler Valiant car, costing £l3OO. Last evening, he parked it. locked, in the City Council park in Tuam street At 10.45 p.m., he returned to find the car had been converted. He informed the police, and had to rouse a member of the firm that sold the car to obtain the registration number and other details to give to the police. The firm lent Mr Sutherland another car until his new one is returned to him.
Early this morning, a taxidriver reported to the police that the converted car had been sighted going north in Papanui road. Other taxis and police patrol cars converged on the area.
At 1 a.m., several taxis and police cars were searching the Papanui - Harewood - Belfast area, but the car had not been seen since the sighting in Papanui road at 12J20 a.m.
