BILLIARDS TITLE

Napper Has Upset Win L. Napper (Otago) scored the biggest upset in recent years when, he beat A. Twohiil (West Coast) tn the post-section play of the New Zealand billiards championships yesterday. Fortunes fluctuated. with Napper always in the lead. After the first hour he was 72 points ahead, but with 30 minutes left the lead had been narrowed to 44. Seven minutes later it had diminished to 25.

Napper, on the alert for an opening. seized a slender chance and made a useful break of 29. Then Twohiil took over when he was left in a perfect position for "top of the table” play. With one minute to go he was 49 and still scoring. But he broke down at 57 and Napper played out time. Napper’s performance should prove a great boost to the Otago association, which has been in recess for eight years. •T. Yesberg (Canterbury) played well in his game with G. Geddes (North Otago), but notwithstanding his determined endeavours, he failed to match the skill of his opponent. Canterbury lost its second game of the day when the No. 2 seed, W. Harcourt (Wellington), beat R. O'Callaghan by 189 points. The battle of the leading New Zealand left-handed players, F. Hawkin (Auckland) and E. Simons (Canterbury) turned out to be a one-sided encounter, Hawkin gaining an easy win. With three days’ play completed and all the seeded players beaten, the final result is still wide open.

Results with best breaks in parentheses were: S. Moses 620 (54, 54, 33) beat R. Weke 262. L. Napper 463 (45) beat A. Twohiil 455 (57, 57). A. Redmond 556 (55) beat B. Paretovich 308. G.
