Cowdrey Available But Not Selected
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—CopyrigM) LONDON, August 25. Although M. C. Cowdrey, who has played in 74 tests, informed the selectors at the last moment that he was available to tour South Africa later this year, the M.C.C. has preferred to nominate M. Brearley because he does not mind opening the innings.
After a four-hour meeting of the selectors, Brearley was nominated to fill the vacant batting place in the team—ll were named earlier this month. Mr Donald Carr, assistant secretary of M.C.C., said that
E. R. Dexter would make the sixteenth man in the tour party if he was available after the British General Election. Dexter is the Conservative candidate for Cardiff SouthEast. Most fancied date for the election is October 15— the date M.C.C. starts its tour. Should Dexter lose, he would presumably be available. The full team is: M. J. K. Smith, Warwickshire, captain), D. A. Allen (Gloucestershire), R. W. Barber (Warwickshire), K. F. Barrington (Surrey), G. Boycott (Yorkshire), J. M. Brearley (Cambridge University and Middlesex), D. J. Brown (Warwickshire), T. W. Cartwright (Warwickshire), R. M. Hobbs (Essex), J. T. Murray (Middlesex), A. G. Nicholson (Yorkshire), P. H. Parfitt (Middlesex), J. M. Parks (Sussex), J. S. Price (Middlesex), F. J. Tltmus (Middlesex).
