THORRINGTON SCHOOL

Issue Put To Ombudsman

The Ombudsman (Sir Guy Powles) has been asked by the Thorrington School Committee to consider the Canterbury Education Board’s proposal to transfer Forms I and II of the school to the Christchurch South Intermediate School next year. Further representations opposing the decapitation of the school will also be made by the member of Parliament for the district (Mr N. E. Kirk) to the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella). “I am taking this step in a further endeavour to secure the reversal of an unwise, unwelcome and unwarranted step,” he said.

One of the most unsatisfactory features of the Education Board’s decision was that it broke faith completely with an assurance given by the then chairman of the board when the school was established that Thorrington would be a full school, Mr Kirk said. The assurance was given because some parents were reluctant to change their children from other schools to Thorrington. Another unsatisfactory feature of the proposed change reflected road safety, Mr Kirk said. Most of the children would be involved in journeys of two miles and a half to three miles on busy city streets and, because there was no direct public transport, would have to use bicycles.
