Coin Sizes Will Be Recommended Soon

f New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 20. The Decimal Currency Board will study immediately machines ages to help the Government decide on conversion policy. The decision was made at the fourth meeting of the board in Wellington today.

The chairman, Mr D. W. A. Barker, said a number of matters had been discussed, “We' have prepared an initial appraisal of the import . licensing problems of the office machinery industry and will soon make a recommendation to the Government on this aspect of the changeover problem,” he said.

A full report on the effects of proposed coinage changes on slot machines was received at the meeting, said Mr Barker.

Equipment included telephones, stamp and chocolate venders, and parking meters. The report by a qualified engineer, after a thorough study of all types of ' slot

machines, gave the necessary information to help decide bronze coin sizes. A recommendation would be made at an early date, said Mr Barker.

“An Important aspect of planning is our programme of work to be done, not only by the board, but also many other groups who will be affected by the change-over,” ■he said.

An example was the need for revision of school arithmetic books.

The board had prepared a plan for the various stages

of the operation up to and 18 months beyond the changeover in 1967. The plan was considered by the board today. It emphasised the need for long-range planning and the consequences of overlooking any one aspect of the operation,

“By careful planning now, costs can be kept down and the change-over . will be smoother for all concerned,” said Mr Barker. This was one of the main objectives of the board, he said.
