Lead Changes Rapidly In Basketball Upset

Dramatic changes of fortune In one game, a surprise reversal in another and a draw between the two leading teams, University A and Y.M.C.A., provided plenty of interest in the thirteenth round of the Canterbury men’s basketball A grade competition last evening. After holding the initiative for most of the game, Y.M.C.A. wilted slightly in the closing minutes and had to be content with a 35-all draw with University A. Y.M.C.A. played the more consistent basketball but a draw was not an unfair result. In the last 10 minutes. University A revived consideraly, showed much better combination and at this stage appeared the better team. Y.M.C.A. began strongly and at half-time Ted 21-15. Shortly after the resumption, University A drew level at 21-all but a few quick baskets sent Y.M.C.A. again out of reach. With 10 minutes to go. Y.M.C.A. led, 30-23. It was then that Unlver. sity A applied the pressure and three minutes later D. Young sent a good jump shot into the basket to put his team In the lead. However, P. Simpson regained the lead for Y.M.C.A. with another fine shot.

Lead Changes Quickly The lead changed twice again In the ensuing minutes but with one minute left, Y.M.C.A. led, 34-33. W. Ward-Holmes then sank two perfect foul shots to nut University A in front. Barely seconds before time, N. Saunders was fouled and was successful with one of his two shots to draw the match. R. Entwistle, the current Canterbury captain, played an outstanding game. He put considerable variety into his play and was extremely accurate anywhere within 10 feet of the basket. His anticipation was also exceptional. Simpson also played one of his better games.

■ridges Handleapped Most of the University players were very unsettled tn the early stages and only showed their true potential in the closing minutes. The American Rotary scholar, S. Bridges, was playing with an Injured knee and although he scored nine points, his play was severely handicapped. W. Y-Boyt suffered a rather ignominious defeat at the hands of the lowly University B team. 37-29. This was the biggest surnrise of the evening for only last week Y-Boys beat University A. then the leading team. Although Y-Bovs netted the first points, It rarely showed any resemblance of the form it dls’olayed the previous week. Lata Victory Burnham snatched victory from Ranglora In the last 30 seconds of the game, winning by 27-20. At half-time, Ranglora led, 12-8, and until the middle stages of the second half held a comfortable lead. A few quick baskets in the last five minutes put Burnham within reach of Rangiora's total.
