Linwood Had Too Much In Reserve
LINWOOD 19: K. Gimblett, K. Fraser, R. Cox. K. Wyber, tries: P. Jellyman, a penalty and two conversions. UNIVESRSITY B 9: J. Wain, a try: P. Gaffikin, two penalties. University B could not have expected a win against Linwood on the performance put up by both teams, but the final score spoke a little too harshly against University. The University players were always enthusiastic and ready to open up the game but they were constantly failing to bring their movement as far as to cross the Linwood line. They were not sufficiently rewarded by a lone trv.
But the scoring of four tries against them was a result as much of inadequate defence as of penetration by Linwood. University were too ready to be sold a dummy and to be bluffed by the tricky running of the Linwood backs. University were, however, unlucky with injuries in the backline. P. Bulfin was off soon after the game started and J. Wain retired at half-time Wain was especially missed—the first try for University came after he and E. Hewett rang the changes nicely on a cut through, a kick ahead and a follow up. The best-earned try for Linwood was scored by K. Gimblett, the five-eighths. Linwood, in general, had more in reserve than University. This showed in the closing minutes when Linwood scored an extra try which would not have come their way against more powerful opposition. Both packs worked hard, and honours were even. The game was fast, clean and worth watching. Referee: Mr C. J. Taylor.
R. M. Smith 1 Plays The former AH Black and present Canterbury B selector, R. M. Smith, turned out for the Christchurch senior team against Albion on Saturday. Playing on the left wing, Smith made some good breaks when he came into the back line and did some good covering work.
