Taxation
Sir,—Mr Holyoake hints at increased taxes for defence. For this purpose he will have most New Zealanders fully behind him. But why increase taxes when the obvious thing to do is prune a hopelessly top-heavy social security system? I, for one, did not want the extra 5s a child (I have four) handed out by Mr Nordmeyer. These Labour Government social security “handouts,” condoned now by the National Government, do nothing more than increase taxes and create an ever-in-creasing number of civil servants. How long before' the taxpayer realises that he and she pays dearly for these, so subtly called "increased benefits,” so conveniently doled out at election times? How long before our political leaders will have the courage to cut the .country’s fabulous social security bill and most urgently and sensibly put the proceeds towards defending and holding this lovely land.— Yours, etc., MAKE MINE ASPIRINS’.
