Bricklayers Employers of bricklayers under the New Zealand (except Northern Industrial District) Bricklayers’ Award will now have to provide their employees’ toilets with a flyproof cover and seat if the convenience is not connected with the sewerage system. Minimum award rates for bricklayers were also increased under their new award which became effective on April 29. The hourly rate during the first week of employment has been increased by 3d to 7s 7d. Subsequent to the first week of employment the weekly rate has been increased 10s weekly to £l5 3s 4d weekly. The rate for a worker in charge of two or more journeymen and who is responsible for carrying out work or who gives instructions to other workers has beep increased 9d daily to 5s daily. A clause governing the laying of concrete blocks has also been altered. Workers required to lay blocks 351 b in weight and over shall be paid an added hourly increment of 3d. No worker is permitted to lay blocks over 431 b without assistance. Workers under the award who supply their own tools, overalls and gloves will be paid 2d hourly above the hourly rate. The award previously called for an hourly payment of Id hourly and glove supplies have been included in the award for the first time.

January 2 or a day in lieu has been added to the list of paid holidays under the award.

A clause calling on employers to supply the district union secretary with names and addresses of all employees within the scope of the award after receiving a written request has been added. The award also makes a provision that where electrical appliances are used the electrical wiring regulations would apply. Where overhead hazards exist during construction work protective head gear must be supplied. No worker could be required to work on roofs covered with material of a brittle nature unless the requirements of the Government Safety Regulations applicable had been met. Other clauses of the award remain unchanged.
