Defeat Of Railway I Feature Of Badminton

The convincing defeat of Railway I by Christchurch was the feature of the A grade interclub series of the Canterbury Badminton Association. The new team, Army, came very close to registering its first victory in the grade, and went down narrowly io Railway 11. D. B. Reid (Christchurch) showed a welcome return to his best form for many years by defeating A. G. Duckmanton (Railway), the Canterbury champion, in straight sets. Both players covered the court quickly and varied play with powerful smashing, fine drop shots and deep clears to the back of the court.

Duckmanton led four-love In setting in the first set, but Reid fought back with clever drops and backhand cross court shots, and didn’t look like being headed after taking the first set. R. Miller (Railway) played an impressive match and appeared as if he would upset the Division I player, B. Wvlie 'Christchurch), when he led 14-10 in the third set, but lack of experience in tight matches cost him his chance. The match between Miss J. Davidson (Avonside) and Miss S. Field (Knox) was long and exciting, mixed with brilliant shots and simple errors by both players: fitness prevailed over the closing stages. Both smashed and cleared powerfully, but Miss Field showed a definite superiority in drop shots. Results: Christchurch 8, Railway I 0 Singles.—D. B Reid beat A. G.
