NEW EDUCATION ACT

Consolidation By Parliament

A consolidated Education Act was expected to bepassed by Parliament this year, the chairman (Mr W. J. Cartwright) told the Christchurch Post-primary Schools’ Council.

The New Zealand Secondary School Boards’ Association had proposed two tidy-ing-up amendments, said the secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan). One concerned the requirement to hold voting papers eight days before counting. Originally this was 52 days and had probably arisen in the days when mails took a long time to arrive from outlying areas. Christchurch operated under its own act, so was not affected.

The other proposal was to do away with the requirement of voters signing the inside of envelopes as a check on valid papers. It was proposed that papers simply be numbered as a check on validity.
